If you were on YouTube in the early 2010s, surely you know about Marcel the Shell, the stop motion snail who is small in size but big on attitude. Now, a decade after the height of Marcel’s popularity, that tiny snail is getting its own A24 movie, aka Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which opens in theaters this weekend.

Comedian Jenny Slate stars as the voice of the adorably ornery snail, a character she co-created with her then-boyfriend Dean Fleischer-Camp in 2010, when the first short film was uploaded to YouTube. Now, this feature-length mockumentary is directed by Fleischer-Camp, who also co-wrote the script with Slate and Nick Paley. The movie sends Marcel on a journey to find his family, with the help of a documentary film crew.

Though he may have graduated to the big screen, the tiny, lovable spirit of Marcel prevails. Here’s what you need to know about where to watch Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and when to expect the Marcel the Shell movie on streaming.

Right now, the only place to watch Marcel the Shell movie is in a movie theater when the film opens in theaters on June 24 in the U.S. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. After the film’s theatrical run, you’ll be able to purchase the movie on digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.

The Marcel the Shell with Shoes On digital release date has not yet been announced. It’s hard to say when Marcel the Shell, which is an A24 release, will come to digital. But we can make an educated guess based on previous A24 releases.

One recent A24 theatrical release, Red Rocket, became available to rent for $19.99 on digital platforms after about two months—aka 45 days, which is more or less the new standard theatrical window since the pandemic—in theaters. If Marcel the Shell follows a similar release, you may be able to rent it as soon as mid-August 2022.

That said, Everything Everywhere All At Once, another A24 release, was released on digital on June 7, which is about 70 days after its theatrical release. If Marcel the Shell follows that release strategy, you may have to wait until early September before you’re able to rent Marcel the Shell for $19.99.

No. Marcel the Shell will not be on HBO Max, because Men is an A24 film and not a Warner Bros. film. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. (Last year, Warner Bros. opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.) It’s possible that X will be on HBO and HBO Max someday, but it will not be any time soon.

No. It’s possible that Marcel the Shell will be on Netflix someday, given that the streaming service hosts a number of A24 films, including Uncut Gems. But there’s no guarantee. If you don’t want to miss the film, your best bet is to see Marcel the Shell in a movie theater or wait to rent it for $19.99.
